The Blog

One of the most common questions we are asked by customers is, "Which "No Fuss Calligraphy" kit is right for me?" All of our kits are geared towards those new to the hand lettering world, and each has it's own unique styles. Here, we'll explain some of the differences (and similarities) to help you make a decision on which kit to purchase first to learn calligraphy - because I guarantee after working through one kit you'll want to snatch up the other!

Our Three "No Fuss Calligraphy" kits are...

1. The Original "No Fuss Calligraphy Starter Kit"
2. The "No Fuss Calligraphy Holiday Project Kit"
3. The "No Fuss Brush Calligraphy Starter Kit"

First, the Similarities!

Each kit includes a pen, instructions on lettering with the specific pen included, and projects with fun backgrounds, tutorials, and more. The No Fuss method focuses on turning your own handwriting into calligraphy - so there aren't tons of tedius drills and pages upon pages of practicing letters - we dive right in to words and sentences ans quotes (the fun stuff)! They are all wire-o bound and with smooth non absorbent paper perfect for beginners to learn calligraphy. Each was 100% written and designed by Ashley Gardner (me!) of Printable Wisdom

The Holiday Project kit has less instruction, and more projects, which we will discuss below. This would be a kit to purchase with the Original Starter Kit and is not meant to be purchased on its own.

Now, let's look at some of the differences, kit by kit.

The Original "No Fuss Calligraphy Starter Kit"
was our very first book launched to teach calligraphy. It includes the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen, which is perfect for beginning calligraphers. It is a stiffer brush pen which is sometimes easier for beginners to manipulate and get the thick and thin strokes of calligraphy. This pen is great for smaller lettering, like when you are addressing wedding invitations or writing long quotes. It is a solid black so it is also great if you want to digitize your lettering!

The No Fuss Holiday Project Kit was our second book to launch. It is meant as a companion to the Original No Fuss Starter Kit (above). This book also includes a Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen. The book briefly covers the instructions for using the pen, and then launches into project after project! There are interactive pages where you will create placecards, art prints, dinner buffet cards, and more. These pages are meant to be cut out and displayed around your home during the holidays! So this kit is a great gift for someone who already has the Original Kit (or buy both together for an extra special surprise for a calligraphy beginner!)

The No Fuss Brush Calligraphy Starter Kit is our most recent calligraphy workbook to launch. It won "Best New Product" at the National Stationery Show in 2016! This kit includes a Tombow dual brush pen. This pen is more flexible, and larger than the pen included with the original kit. It is a deep warm grey, and when writing with it your lettering takes on a fantastic ombre gradient. This pen is best for larger lettering - when doing posters or art prints, and quotes with fewer letters. It can be used to address envelopes but will take up more space. This kit includes some special techniques for lettering such as shading. We love this kit for people who are interested in creating designs with lots of colors, as the Tombow Dual Brush pen comes in a wide array of colors that you can add to your collection after completing the kit!

So which should I buy?

To start, you can purchase either the Original Kit or the Brush Calligraphy Kit. Each would suit beginners, and it depends on the type of lettering you are most drawn to. The Holiday Kit is best when purchased with or after you purchase the Original Kit.
